Stay low and fast with the agile design of the New Balance 851. New Balance has engineered this low-profile shoe to be their lightest weight performance tennis shoe yet.

Upper: Synthetic and mesh upper provide a sleek, comfortable fit without adding bulk. Long wearing drag tip enhances durability for toe draggers. Molded "N" logo adds stylish flair. Padded tongue and heel collar for additional comfort.

Midsole: Low profile midsole puts your foot close to the ground for smooth, speedy footwork. ABZORB®, New Balance's top of the line foam, provides a superior blend of cushioning and compression set features with DuPont™ Engage® and isoprene rubber for the ultimate ride. ACTEVA® ULTRA LITE is 32% lighter than standard midsole foam and provides optimal compression set features thanks to DuPont™ Elvaloy®. A lightweight, nylon shank improves the midfoot integrity of the shoe and helps prevent torsion. PL-1 performance last. Removable, perforated insert enhances comfort.

Outsole: NDurance rubber compound is used for maximum durability in high wear areas. Herringbone tread pattern provides traction on a variety of court surfaces. Non-marking outsole won't damage court- or household-surfaces.

Available in widths D (Medium) and EE (Wide).

    • Q:

How do you compare the 851 versus the 1005 with regards to support, comfort and wear ? Being quite a bit lighter would seem to give the 851 an advantage. Am currently wearing the 1004.

        A:

The 851 is a much lighter, low-to-the-ground shoe than the 1004 or 1005. While being low and light has its advantages, there is a tradeoff. In order to make shoes lighter, often some of the cushioning material or support has to be removed to save weight. How long this shoe lasts will depend upon your style of play and how often you play, but the New Balance 851 does have a 1 Year Outsole Guarantee. To get the best of both worlds, many players will actually keep two pairs of shoes: one lightweight pair (like the 851) for match days, and one more cushioned pair (like the 1005) for practice days.

    • About New Balance
New Balance has grown to be one of the largest manufacturers of running shoes and they've done this without expensive advertising campaigns. New Balance knows that there is no better press than positive word-of-mouth. New Balance began as an arch support company, but in 1960, they designed the first running shoe with a ripple sole and the first running shoe that came in varying widths. It didn't take long before New Balance running shoes were used by college track teams all over the country. Today, New Balance makes their shoes available in more widths than almost any other company and that means that there's a New Balance that can fit nearly any foot. Although they started by making running shoes, New Balance tennis shoes are an industry staple and are loved by recreational and serious players. New Balance also makes fine running and tennis apparel, as well as a variety of socks and other sporting accessories.
