Wilson's US Open Orange Balls are low compression balls that travel slower than a standard ball making it easier and more fun for beginning players to learn the game. These balls are designed for Stage 2 Orange and are ITF® & USTA® approved.

The ITF's Play & Stay™ and USTA's Quickstart™ initiatives are based on children using the right sized racquet and reduced speed balls on smaller courts suited to their size and age. These programs aim to retain players in the sport by ensuring that their first experience is both positive and enjoyable.

Comments about Wilson US Open Orange Box of 48:

I use these balls to teach children 8 and under tennis. They are great because they are so soft that if a child gets hit with the ball they don't become afraid of the ball. they bounce just right for those just beginning tennis. However if you play with anyone above the age of 8 that is beginning I would recommend the Stage 3 ball. Which I love to teach beginners with all the way to age 14.

I want to buy tennis balls for grandkids aged 7 & 9. They have some experience hitting but not much! Is thisnthe right ball or are there better ones?

Yes! This tennis ball is on the "Top five beginner tennis balls" list. It would be a good beginner tennis ball.

          A:

Under the Quickstart tennis initiative, Stage 2 (Orange) tennis balls are primarily intended for children between the ages of nine and ten years old. They have a lower bounce and are slower-moving than traditional tennis balls, so these would be perfect for your older grandchild. For your younger grandchild, you might want to consider Stage 3 (Red) tennis balls (http://www.holabirdsports.com/wilson-us-open-red-box-of-36.html) instead. Stage 3 (Red) balls are designed for children under eight years old and bounce even lower and move even slower than Stage 2 (Orange) balls. Keep in mind that while these age ranges are "suggested," there is some wiggle room depending on the child's skill. For instance a six or seven year-old child with significant experience and fairly polished technique may be ready to advance to Stage 2 (Orange) balls, even though Stage 3 (Red) balls are suggested for their age. Ultimately it is a bit of a judgment call. These Orange balls are certainly fine for your older grandchild and may work fine for your younger grandchild as well, depending on his or her skill level.
