  • Q:

what last is the 1290 built on? Also are there any specs to judge what weight runner is best served by this shoe? I have had a pair of 1290 for a week and they seem like the stiffest running shoes I've ever used. I am 5-10 and 155 lbs...maybe too light for these stiff shoes?

      A:

The 1290 is built on a Natural PL-1 last. The PL-1 last is listed as a performance last. New Balance designates the 1290 as a speed shoe and it has a blown rubber forefoot so it should be fairly flexible. That being said, the stiffness and feel of a shoe is somewhat subjective. You may need to try a different shoe or even a different brand altogether.

There are no details regarding height and weight specifications that are ideal for these shoes. The midfoot uses ABZORB® shock absorption, and the foam is REVlite, which is 30% lighter than comparable foams, which could be why you are experiencing the stiffness.

  • About New Balance
New Balance has grown to be one of the largest manufacturers of running shoes and they've done this without expensive advertising campaigns. New Balance knows that there is no better press than positive word-of-mouth. New Balance began as an arch support company, but in 1960, they designed the first running shoe with a ripple sole and the first running shoe that came in varying widths. It didn't take long before New Balance running shoes were used by college track teams all over the country. Today, New Balance makes their shoes available in more widths than almost any other company and that means that there's a New Balance that can fit nearly any foot. Although they started by making running shoes, New Balance tennis shoes are an industry staple and are loved by recreational and serious players. New Balance also makes fine running and tennis apparel, as well as a variety of socks and other sporting accessories.
