  Your heart rate can be detected with your touch, but you must use the buttons on the side to set it up.

  Setup will require that you use the watch buttons. Switching between modes is also done using the buttons. The "touch" part of the name refers to how the watch measures heart rate. Simply place a finger from your opposite hand on the rim of the watch and it will measure your heart rate.
