Comments about Wilson Six.One 95S 2014:

I demoed this racquet using Holabird's Demo Program. My main reason for demoing it was I felt the specs (mainly lighter weight) made the 6.1 line of racquets more accessible for a wider range of players.

Generally, I would say that Wilson's 6.1 line of racquets throughout the years have always been a tad bit heavy and un-maneuverable, though I have always coveted their stiffness and power profiles (I play with a BLX Pro Staff 95). The 95S retains the same stiffness profile AND decreases the weight. This alone, I think, will draw interest among players like myself.

The only issue is, it's not clear to me how many people will like the "S" stringing pattern, though I will admit that on this racquet, the open pattern isn't as absurd as say on the Pro Staff 95S (16x15?). The pattern here is 18x16, which when you think about it, is basically the transpose of a typical Wilson 95 sq in racquet (which has a string pattern of 16x18 or 16x19).

I think had I played with the racquet longer, I would have gotten used to it. Balls didn't spray all over the place like they did when I demoed the Pro Staff 95S. I liked the weight and the stiffness profile which I felt gave me more power than my BLX Pro Staff.

But, I will say that it just doesn't have the same feel as my trusty Pro Staff. Back when I was growing up, I think I wouldn't have cared so much about feel and been more interested in a bump in power. But today, I'm more interested in touch and feel.

So I think this racquet would be good for players even through the intermediate stages of development. At the same time, I will rib Wilson on their "S" design- for this particular racquet, I just don't think the 18x16 pattern makes a difference. So why not just make it 16x18? Oh yeah they do, except that that version is like an ounce heavier!

Control your spin racquet

Cons

Best Uses

  • The Best Controlled Spin

Open pattern spin racquets have been hard for me control, but the 6.1 95s with its 18 mains offer lots of control with Wilson's SPIN technology. The spin is not as much as some of the open pattern spin racquets, but the added control makes it more of a players stick!

  • Q:

Follow up from my recent question. I am a 74 year old 4.0 6 feet 2 inch 170 lb. male in good shape who hits the ball flat and plays doubles mostly. My present racquet is an old Wilson Pro Staff 6.1 stretch 28 inch racquet. Which WILSON Pro Staff racquet or WILSON 6.1 racquet should I demo?
    Thanks for your help.

Measurement marks have been added at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock spots on the racquets for optimum placement of tuning tape, allowing a player to fully customize his or her racquet balance.
