  • Q:

I was ready to buy a Babolat racquet and I want it strung. But there are so many string types. Is there a reference chart for what type is for each type of play, and what string gauges and tensions are preferable.

E.g. most strings come in 16 or 17 gauge. What is the resulting difference between them?

E.G. there are Hurricane strings, Hurricane Pro, Hurricane Feel, etc. What are the differences?

    Thanks.

      A:

Selecting a string (especially for the first time) can certainly be overwhelming. A lot of choosing a string is personal preference, so unfortunately, there is no universal chart. For a broad overview of string types and playing characteristics, you should definitely check out our article about Selecting a String on our Tennis Tech Center (http://www.holabirdsports.com/tennis-tech-center/select-string.html). Gauge is a reference to the thickness of the string. 16 gauge is probably the most common gauge, but 17 is very common as well. The lower the number, the thicker the string is, although the exact measurement (usually expressed in millimeters) can vary some. Thicker strings will tend to be a bit more durable and thinner strings will tend to provide a slightly better feel. The three strings you specifically referenced (Pro Hurricane Tour, Pro Hurricane, and Hurricane Feel), all belong to a family of strings called "polyester." Polyester strings are made from one solid piece of string—as opposed to bundles of string wrapped together—and they tend to be relatively stiff and durable. Pro Hurricane is a pretty standard polyester string, Pro Hurricane Tour has a sort of squared off shape that grips the ball for more spin, and Hurricane Feel is a slightly softer and more forgiving polyester. If you aren't breaking strings and are just looking for a nice, soft string that offers all-around performance, Babolat Addiction is a good choice to start with. Tension is also very much based on personal preference, but I usually recommend that people string right in the middle of the manufacturer's recommended range if they are not sure.
