Comments about Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power Rough 125:

My son, a 5.0 player, swears by this string as a main string in his hybrid stringing system. It helps improve his spin to make sure the ball stays in on those tough shots.

    • Q:

Why do you recommend a 10% reduction in the tension? I am using Gamma ZOTWIST 16 at 66lbs. What happen if I use the same tension?

        A:

The 10% tension reduction is actually recommended by the manufacturer. When stringing with a polyester string, we usually recommend closer to a 5% reduction (usually 2-3 pounds) from your tension with a non-polyester string but ultimately it's up to each player. Gamma Zo Twist and Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power Rough are both polyester strings (although, technically Luxilon is constructed of a different, proprietary material), so if you are comfortable with Zo Twist at 66 pounds, you shouldn't have any problems with ALU Power Rough at 66 pounds. There are, however, several reasons why reduced tension is recommended with polyester strings. Due to their construction, polyester strings are very, very stiff. When strung at the same tension as a softer string--like natural gut or a multifilament--the polyester stringbed will be far stiffer, resulting in a harsher experience for the player's arm. The second reason relates more to spin and the (somewhat) unique ability of polyester strings to "snap back" before the ball leaves the string bed. When the ball hits the stringbed, it displaces at least a few of the main strings. Due to the friction between mains and crosses, most types of strings do not "snap back" to their original position at all or don't do so until after the ball has already left. Polyester strings are somewhat unique and actually can "snap back" to their original position before the ball leaves the stringbed, thereby imparting extra spin on the ball. Lower tensions allow greater string displacement and can increase spin potential with polyester strings.
