If I told you that I had to size up slightly, that they didn't fit well at first, that I returned a pair 1/2 size smaller because they seemed narrow but that they are now my favorite shoes EVER, you would think I am lying but I most certainly am not. I usually wear a 12 4E in the 1006 and I have worn every 1000 series shoe since the 1001. My favorite was the 1003 and I have said that I wish I had bought a dozen pairs back when they were available. I had custom orthotics made a few years ago and they were uncomfortable and hot on the court, but they did give me an idea of how to solve my under pronation problem more economically. I was convinced in the comfort potential of the LAV's and bought the first pair despite the pain and tightness I felt (plus the difficulty I had putting them on). Here's what I did:
I bought $18 shoe stretchers on Amazon and learned to use them to make the shoes wider, deeper in the toe box and stretched out the no tongue opening.
I spent a little time learning to use the stretchers properly and set them up to minimize pressure points and soreness. I could have made the shoes longer as well but it was not necessary because I sized up. I have not had to restretch any of the 4 pairs I bought.
I bought cheap plastic 7" long shoe horns to help me put them on
I inserted New Balance off the shelf orthotics made for my foot type
This may seem like a lot of work but it is worth it to a guy who wants tennis shoes that really fit and feel like…
