Bracket Busters
On the women's side, seeded players Venus Williams, Aga Radwanska, Caroline Garcia, and Barbora Strycova all fell victim to first round upsets. Shuai Peng is also out of the tournament, having retired while trailing 0-6, 0-2. On the men's side, Feliciano Lopez, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Ivo Karlovic, and Adrian Mannarino were sent packing.
The Head Case
Russian Mikhail Youzhny took quite a beating, literally, during his first round match. The Russian eventually retired trailing 2-6, 1-6 but not before he twice gave his skull a good, frustrated beating with his racquet. It's not Youzhny's first bout with his racquet; a few years back, he bludgeoned himself so thoroughly that he drew blood.
Selfie Obsessed
As Roger Federer was walking off the court after notching a first round win, an overzealous young fan ran onto the court and tried to snap a selfie with the Swiss star. Federer pushed the fan away and it took several seconds for security to react and pull the fan away. Federer addressed the incident in his press conference after the match, saying "It's not that funny" and that "this should never happen on Philippe Chatrier court." A similar incident occurred during Roger's practice on Saturday when a few fans approached him and the security team didn't intercept them.
Underhanded Dealings
French player Virginie Razzano reached deep into the bag of tricks and tried the underhanded serve twice in her match against Veronica Cepede Royg. She didn't win either point, but she did win the match and moved on to the second round.
Boo Birds
The fickle French crowd was at it again on Monday, booing Maria Sharapova as she walked off the court without giving a post-match interview. In her press conference, the Russian said she was battling a cold and didn't wish to speak. She did state that she didn't expect the cold to affect her play.
Almost Perfect
Of the 16 men's matches played in Day 1, 15 of them were completed in straight sets. Only Garcia-Lopez v. Johnson went more than the minimum with Johnson pulling out a five set upset win.
