We are right in the middle of Climate Week NYC 2015. According to the Climate Week website this year's Climate Week will "highlight how climate action and low carbon growth will benefit today’s economy without compromising future generations." The focus is on business and government taking action to build a strong economy that relies on renewable energy and low carbon technology.
Two of the biggest sportswear companies are making changes to help the economy. Nike Inc. was one of several Fortune 500 companies that have committed to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2025. This is part of the global RE100 initiative.
In a press release put out by The Climate Group, Nike's COO, Eric Sprunk said, "Climate change is a global issue that requires global solutions. We believe that collaboration is important to accelerate and scale sustainable innovations that have potential to change the world, and Nike is proud to join the leading global brands in RE100 with our commitment to reach 100% renewable energy."
While not a part of the RE100, adidas recently launched Sport Infinity, a three-year research project funded by the European Commission and led by adidas. The idea is to bring together industry and academic experts to develop soccer cleats that can be recycled repeatedly using no chemical adhesives and that create no waste. Adidas wants to create high-performance products that can always be recycled. In April, adidas joined up with Parley for the Oceans, with them they are going to try and make apparel from recycled ocean waste.
