Competitor Mag 2016 Award Winners
This year Competitor magazine didn't just review shoes, they went all out, reviewing tech gear, apparel and nutrition. Here are some of the best of the best of the 2016 Competitor magazine award winners.
Editor's Choice 2016
The 2016 winner is the Hoka One One Vanquish 2. Competitor loves the responsiveness with one tester claiming that it "sets the standard for energy return in a running shoe." They also love the flexibility, thick cushioning and seem honestly in awe of how light it is.
Best Update 2016 – Maximally Cushioned Models
This year's winner is the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v6, thanks to the smoothing of the foot's transition and the thick, soft cushioning and extra-wide footprint. The best changes that were noted are the "addition of flex grooves ion the midsole and outsole that help increase flexibility and lend a smoother heel-toe transition."
Best Update 2016 – Maximal Models
Another Hoka One One winner, this time the Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2, with "a forgiving—but not too squishy—ride." The upper is more secure for better running on technical terrain and this shoe also runs well on pavement. This Hoka feels more firm than others while still having that trademark plushy cushiness, giving you a "forgiving yet somewhat agile" shoe.
Best Debut 2016 - Mid Range Stability
The Mizuno Wave Catalyst won for its mix of stability and lightweight performance. This everyday trainer is light and fast while still being more durable and stable than most. The design is low to the ground but it has enough protection and cushioning for a longer run. The Competitor testers called the Catalyst a "great do-everything shoe."
Best Value 2016 - Minimal Models Models
The Merrell All-Out Crush will give you the most for your money. Reviewers love the low-to-the-ground profile, featherweight construction, flexibility and minimal overall feel. The Crush breathes well thanks to the mesh upper and the drain holes make wet running no problem.
Editor's Choice 2016
The tech-enhanced Suunto Ambit3 Multisport Vertical GPS watch displays real-time ascent and descent and vertical speed. You can even create and share a 3D topographical map movie of your run complete with data and pictures!
Editor's Choice 2016 - Running Socks
The new Feetures Elite Max Cushion no-show sock gives you targeted compression through the arch area and thick cushioning. Reviewers love the "secure fit, feel and cushy comfort."
Editor's Choice 2016 - Apparel
The Saucony Daybreak Long Sleeve Shirt shirt won thanks to its "well-worn cotton" feel but its "sweat-wicking powers of technical nylon." Reviewers found it the perfect item for those in-between days. And, of course, they love the thumbholes.
Editor's Choice 2016
Glukos Gel and Gummies is the winner this year thanks to the use of glucose—the most readily usable energy source." Reviewers found that when your body has to work less to turn food into fuel, it can use that energy other places (like your leg muscles).
