Running Shoes that Offer Support for Flat-Footed/Low-Arched Over Pronators
"Running is a road to self-awareness and reliance- you can push yourself to extremes and learn the harsh reality of your physical and mental limitations or coast quietly down a solitary path watching the earth spin beneath your feet." - Doris Brown Heritage, First Woman to Run Sub-Five Minute Indoor Mile.

Ahh, yes. Running.

Whether you're a long-time runner or someone who has just started his or her running journey, we can all benefit from the proper running shoe. And if you're someone whose proper running shoe happens to be a support shoe, you're in luck.

The beginning of 2017 is all about support. Supporting our own fitness goals, but also supporting each other.

And some of our favorite brands, Mizuno, Asics, Hoka One One, Saucony, New Balance and Under Armour, want to support us, too: our strides, specifically.

As a refresher, a support shoe, also known as a stability shoe, is created for overpronation, the natural inward twisting motion of the foot and ankle, which usually occurs in flat-footed people or those who have low arches.

Overpronators need maximum support, structured cushioning, and stability. The stability of support shoes distributes the impact of running more effectively to minimize pronation.

So using each company's own technology, there are six shoes we think you should consider trying if you're in need of a support shoe:

  1. Hoka One One Arahi:

The Hoka One One Arahi zeroes in on stability with an impressively lightweight and cushioned design. This shoe reinvents the stability shoe, making for a more desirable fit and feel from the J-Frame™ technology. Hoka calls this type of guidance: dynamic stability. And with its Meta-Rocker technology, designed to encourage a smoother ride and natural transition from heel to forefoot, this new kind of stability shoe will help promote a more pain-free and guided running experience for the mild to moderate overpronator.

  2. Asics Gel Kayano 23:

The latest Asics GEL-Kayano 23 will continue to be a favorite for runners who’ve loved the cushioning and stability from this model over the years. The most significant change is an improved fit on the heel as well as for the entire foot. Runners will experience an update of lightweight and cushioned responsiveness from the added FlyteFoam™ technology. Moderate to severe overpronators alike will benefit the most from this highly supportive running shoe.

  3. Mizuno Wave Catalyst 2:

The Mizuno Wave Catalyst 2 continue to blend speed and support for an all-around excellent running experience. This new version features an updated midsole with a New U4ic compound for optimal shock attenuation, durability and a superior ride that’s 30% lighter than AP+. DynamotionFIT moves with the foot for a secure, flexible fit, AIRmesh provides breathability and comfort, X10 durable carbon rubber delivers longer wear in high impact areas and SmoothRide Engineering minimizes rapid acceleration and deceleration of the foot during transition. If that wasn't enough, Wave Technology® dissipates impact forces away from the foot for a smoother, more cushioned feel on every step. And it comes with a removable insole. This model remains ideal for runners seeking a touch of guidance.

  4. New Balance 1500v3:

Perfect for a day at the track or on race day, the New Balance 1500v3 has what you need to help you reach your next PR. A super lightweight engineered mesh, FantomFit, meets a touch of stability to take runners from the 800m to the marathon with comfort and style. Its REVlite midsole offers a lightweight, responsive ride and its "T-beam," a lightweight, flexible TPU shank is engineered to deliver optimum torsional stability and arch support through a unique center beam design.  The 1500V3's bold colors and design make a statement before and after the run.

  5. Saucony Hurricane Iso 3:

The Saucony Hurricance ISO 3 continues to focus on providing runners with optimal support and stability in a highly cushioned and adaptive structure. ISOFIT combines a soft inner sleeve and a floating cage to create a dynamic fit system that adapts to the shape and motion of your foot. This new edition features an expansion of the EVERUN landing zone that gives runners more of that long-lasting responsiveness they loved from the previous model.

  6. UA Speedform Europa:

The new Under Armour Speedform® Europa provides runners with the beloved lightweight, SpeedForm® feel with an increased level of support for the long run. With Charged Cushioning® that contains a compression molded foam, runners can experience better responsiveness and durability. Runners will reap the benefits of the Micro G Heel Unit and Micro G Medial posting that work together with a dual density medial post to stabilize the foot.

Whatever your stability shoe poison, each of these shoes are sure to be a hit for your stride.
