Squash is up against seven other sports for one open slot in the 2020 Olympics. The other sports include a combined baseball-softball bid, karate & wushu, roller sports, sport climbing and wakeboarding. Last month, wrestling was booted.
Since then, wrestling has seen a ton of support from around the world.
On May 29 both squash and wrestling will make presentations to get their sports in the 2020 Olympics.
This will be squash’s third try. In 2005, the Olympics didn’t accept any new sports. In 2009, it lost to rugby and golf. Hopefully, the third time is the charm.
World Squash President N. Ramachandran says that squash has changed to fit IOC standards. Some of the changes include a new scoring system, glass courts, and referee video reviews.
Squash seemed a front runner… until wrestling came along. Wrestling has been in the Olympics since the beginning and the sport itself goes all the way back to Ancient Greece. Most people believe that the IOC won't take wrestling back so soon after cutting it. However, most people believed they wouldn't be cut to begin with.
