Tracking data about your run--be it pace, distance, or time--has always required the use of a GPS watch, smart phone, or computer. The Milestone Pod is changing that.
The Milestone Pod is a small device that not only tells you how many miles you have logged in your trainers, but also tracks important info about your run without ever having to bring a smart phone or ancillary device with you. All you need to do is attach the pod to your shoe laces and go run. You don't have to take the pod off to sync it -- all you have to do is wiggle your foot in the vicinity of your smart phone. And, thanks to the long lasting battery, you can leave the pod in place until you replace your shoes.
To make the most of your Milestone experience, you should download the free Milestone Pod app from the Apple Store or Google Play. If you're an iPhone user, you must have an iPhone 4s or a more current model. The app will be available for Droid users on March 10.
After downloading and opening the app, you will be create an account and be prompted to shake the pod until you see a red light to "pair" your phone with the app. Pairing is the process of establishing communication between the pod and the phone through Bluetooth technology. After both items are paired, you will answer a few questions about yourself as a runner and choose the model of running shoes that you'll be using.
Now you're ready to go run. At any time you may tap on the face of the Milestone Pod to see how many miles you've logged on your shoe. The number will be accompanied by a green light. "It's a reminder of how many miles a runner has on his or her shoe," says Milestone Pod CEO Jason Kaplan. "It helps runners get a better idea of when they should replace their shoes."
